Job: Reporter or Feature Writer
Welcome to the world of reporting! Reporters are the heart and soul of a newspaper. Your job might be to research and write a news story. Sometimes you will be on “the beat”. Do you know what this means? Your “beat” is your assigned topic or area. Maybe you’ll be on the beat on the playground, sniffing for a good story. Or maybe you’ll want to look into our lunch program and do a little research on healthy eating. Or maybe you've got a good idea for a column. What is your passion? Is it sports? The enviroment? Helping others? Reading and talking about good books? Your task might be to develop a column that shares your opinions, your knowledge, and your enthusiasm for your topic. Please print out a copy of the rubric you'll use at the bottom of this page. Now let's get started!
Step 1:
First things first, please work on this form below (task.docx). The information you provide will help form your work plan. You will need to download this form, print it (select the library printer), follow it's instructions, and hand it into Mrs. Allison by the end of class. You will also act as a copy editor for someone else in the reporter/features article group. Check over another's work, give suggestions, and sign your name under "copy editor". When editing, please use the red pen located on Mrs. Allison's desk. In the newspaper room, a copy editor checks for correct grammar, spelling, and clarity.
Also visit this website on Beginning Reporting. Look at links, depending on your interests, needs, and nature of your written work. Share a interesting thing you learned with another writer ... and with Mrs.Allison.

Step 4:
Now that you have a plan and an idea of what you would like to write about, you can get started. It is expected that you might have to work on this outside of library time. Your will save all your work in two places! The first place is on our server. Use a netbook and save all your work into the Newspaper Folder on our public access. Inside that folder, please find the folder for the current edition. Please label all your files with your first name, underscore, and topic. For example, Sam_Advicecolumn or Suzie_PrincipalInterview.
The second place is in our online edition. Visit the online template that Mrs. Allison has set up, login using the username and password provided by Mrs. Allison, and find the pages for the reporters and writers. Upload your files. If you do not know how to do this, please watch this small tutorial.

Save your final copy in the Newspaper folder, on the wiki, and print a copy. Give a hard copy, with your rough draft stapled to it, to Mrs.Allison.
Step 6:
Complete the following reflection on Survey Monkey on the last day of class. Use a netbook, be sure to fill in all forms, and reflect. Your input and suggestions will help me develop this unit and amend it as we go forward with our second edition. Thank you!
